In the previous article we looked at how to use just enough pressure when fretting notes on the guitar. Let’s look at a few more pointers to get the most out of your chords while learning all the various strumming patterns on this website.
I’d like to introduce you to my “4 Easy Tips For Killer Sounding Chords” method. Thing is when you use them in your playing then awesome ringing chords basically happen automatically.
Playing chords properly on the guitar doesn’t require a lot of effort. In fact when you do it the right way things will come about effortlessly.
- In order to avoid fret buzz make sure you’re in the middle of the fret area and not towards the back.
- Use the tip of your finger to fret the notes. Ideally you want an equal amount of “finger” sticking out above and below the fretted note.
- In order to avoid dud notes make sure you’re finger is properly arched so that it doesn’t touch the adjacent strings.
- Use your thumb to apply just enough pressure to get the notes to ring out. This motion is very similar to squeezing an orange.
If you use all 4 tips above then your chords should ring out as clear as a bell. Once you have the chord fretted make sure you pick every note of the chord separately. This will allow you to hear if there are any notes that aren’t ringing out clearly.
Here’s a video where I demonstrate these 4 Tips.

Very cool tips, thanks man!
Great tips.
Now my turn: Try not to drag the tips out so much. I know you’re just explaining how it comes naturally to you, but try to shorten the clips. I will most definitely be more eager to share them then.
one other obvious tip. practice heaps. Your fingers will get stronger with practice and with that, it’ll be easier.
